Where to begin.

For a while now, Rien has been making us laugh or pants off with his impersonation of a Japanese Wu Tang Clan /Keirin fan. Things got even worse when I showed him this clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBxymNFEmxA

Besides more laughs, the clip got him thinking about throwing a Street Keirin race, as shown in the clip. And when Rien gets an idea in his head, he acts swift. Within two weeks, he sought out a track, did a photo shoot with Hennie to make a kickass flyer, got John to make spokecards and even bought prizes for the race.

A total of twelve racers showed up and about ten people tagged along to watch the race. Even Serge, avid cyclist, mechanic for some of Holland’s most talented sprinters and the man behind Bikeparts4u showed up with his homeys and donated some Campa caps. I still owe you one beer.

Smiles and style for miles

Within no time Rien had divided the racers into to four heats of three racers and explained how the first heats were to go down. Rien would bring the racers up to speed during a lap and a half and then make way for the sprints to take place. Racers would then have one lap and a half to battle it out. I had the honour of ringing the bell for each last lap. Yes, Rien even hustled up a bell.

Here’s how the first heats went down:

Heat 1: Frank the Tank – John – Bruce

John had a bit of a disadvantage on his Cutter, due to his light gearing, so it was up to Bruce and Frank to see who was the strongest. It was a shame Bruce didn’t bring his track bike, because on his conversion he had the disadvantage of a lower BB shell. He kept coming close to Frank on the straights, but Frank gained metres in the corners. Frank won, Bruce came second, John third.

Heat 2: Saskia – Erik – Olle

Olle is Jorrit’s kid brother, who just came back from Japan. From the start it was obvious he picked up some Keirin knowledge. He took the lead from the get go and smoked Erik and Saskia. Erik blamed his fobia for paint stains for losing.

Heat 3: Jorrit – Hennie – Chaim

What can I say. Hennie is fast, but his tactics outshine his speed. He gets in your head and makes you insecure. By doing stupid shit. By making you think “This is one crazy motherfucker.” So you back down. And then he takes off. And sprints to victory. Love it. Hennie one, Chaim second, Jorrit third.

Heat 4: Peet the Great – Jappo – Merijn

Jappo actually interrupted his crazy trip through Europe to make it to the first Street Keirin tournament. Best race so far. Newcomer Merijn was dropped easily and then it was on. True Keirin racing. Cornering right next to each other, racing to the finish, who’s a gonna win, who’s a gonna win… Peet beat Jappo by just half a wheel. Merijn came in third.

So, on to the Semi finals. The numbers one and two of the first heats were put into new heats of four racers. The number one and two’s of these heats went on to the finals. The number three’s all were piled up into one heat and had one last chance of making it to the finals. Oh, and all racers had two and a half lap to sprint to victory.

Semi Final 1: Frank the Tank – Bruce – Olle – Erik

Again, the race quickly turned into a two man show. Bruce and Frank were at it again. But this time, the extra lap got the best of Bruce. Frank won with two fingers in his nose. Litterally. Erik came in third and turned in his time trial suit for some cold beers. Japanese wonder kid Olle got beat by his jetlag, coming in last.

Semi Final 2: Henny – Chaim – Peet the Great – Jappo

Again. Hennie dominated the race for start to finish. Shouting. Zig-zagging. And then rocketing off. Chaim was a worthy adversary, but Hennie was too fast in the corners. To me the best part of the race again was fought between Peet and Jappo. They were close and Peet thought he had secured third place. He didn’t see Jappo was coming around the corner quickly and was beat in the last metres.

Revanche race: John – Saskia – Jorrit – Merijn

Don’t have much to say about this race. I think that’s because I was busy drinking beer and making jokes. I even forgot to ring the bell on time. I do the strat took forever, Jorrit won by a about mile and Saskia won style points due to her skid finish.

Before we entered the finish, we gave Jorrit some time to catch his breath. Roy and John kicked some tricks, to keep the audience happy. But before we knew it, it was time to race again.

FINALS! Frank – Bruce – Hennie – Chaim – Jorrit

The finals definitely were the best race of the night. After Rien made way on the track, Hennie and Frank took off. Chaim was able to keep up, followed closely by Bruce. At the first bend, Hennie and Frank took some metres on Chaim and Bruce and Jorrit was dropped. The two titans kept gaining metres on the followers and Bruce was losing ground to Chaim. The final bend. Frank is right besides Hennie, waiting for his final rush. But just before Frank decided to go, Hennie got out of the saddle and worked his magic. Frank stayed besides Hennie, but couldn’t pass.

Toa Kae Noi!

Final result:

1. Hennie (The Hague)

2. Frank (Amstelveen)

3. Chaim (Valkenburg)

4. Bruce (Rotterdam)

5. Jorrit (Rotterdam)

Flossin'

The top three racers got some typical Japanese prizes. Tao Kae Noi (fried sea weed), some bami soup, tubes, a pump and Hup Holland Hup orange Campa caps.

Frank keepin it fashionable - double klakske steez

We chilled at the track untill one o’clock. Watched the local Marocan football teams play their night tournament and headed to Spooky’s for snacks afterwards.

All and all, the evening was a great succes. Great organisation, nice details, cool races, cooler beers, some prizes and an old-fashioned Friday Night Ride vibe!

Thanks Rien. And to all you kids reading this, keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events.
